Treatment overview
Otoplasty — or ear reshaping surgery — corrects prominent, asymmetric, or misshapen ears by sculpting the cartilage to bring the ears into a more natural position closer to the head. Dr. Asheesh Dhingra performs otoplasty at Olive Skin & Aesthetics for both adults and older children.
The procedure dramatically improves self-consciousness associated with protruding ears, allowing patients to wear their hair up or short with confidence. Results are permanent and look entirely natural.
- Adults or children (age 5+) with prominent or protruding ears
- Individuals with asymmetric ear positioning
- Patients whose ears lack a defined antihelical fold
- Those who feel self-conscious about ear appearance in photos or with short hair
- Non-smokers in good health (or healthy children with parental consent)
Otoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation (or general anaesthesia for young children) and takes 1–2 hours. Incisions are placed behind the ear in the natural crease where they remain completely hidden.
Dr. Dhingra uses a combination of cartilage scoring and permanent mattress sutures to reshape the antihelical fold and reduce conchal bowl depth, achieving a balanced, symmetric correction.
- Day 1–2: Ears wrapped in a supportive dressing; mild throbbing or discomfort managed with medication.
- Week 1: Dressing removed and replaced with a headband worn at night. Ears appear slightly swollen.
- Week 2–3: Most swelling and bruising resolved; patients return to work or school.
- Month 1: Ears feel less sensitive; nighttime headband use may be discontinued.
- Month 2–3: Final ear position and shape fully established; all activities unrestricted.
