Treatment overview
Breast reduction surgery—or reduction mammaplasty—removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size more proportional to the patient’s body. Dr. Asheesh Dhingra at Olive Skin & Aesthetics performs this procedure to relieve physical discomfort and improve quality of life. Each surgery is customised to balance aesthetic goals with functional relief.
Beyond cosmetic improvement, breast reduction alleviates chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain caused by disproportionately large breasts. Patients often experience improved posture, greater ability to exercise, and enhanced self-confidence. The reshaped breasts are lifted and more symmetric, providing both physical and emotional benefits.
Who is a Good Candidate?
- Women experiencing chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain attributable to heavy breasts
- Patients with deep bra-strap grooves, skin irritation, or rashes beneath the breast fold
- Individuals whose breast size restricts physical activity or exercise
- Women who feel self-conscious or limited in clothing choices due to breast volume
- Patients in overall good health who have realistic goals about size reduction
The Procedure
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes 2.5–4 hours. Dr. Dhingra most commonly employs the inverted-T (anchor) or vertical (lollipop) incision pattern depending on the volume to be removed. Excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin are excised, and the nipple–areola complex is repositioned to a more youthful height on the newly shaped breast mound.
A superior or superomedial pedicle technique is used to maintain blood supply and sensation to the nipple–areola complex during repositioning. Liposuction may be employed at the lateral chest to refine the transition between the breast and underarm. Dr. Dhingra sculpts each breast individually, comparing symmetry at multiple stages throughout the operation to ensure a balanced result.
Recovery Timeline
- Days 1–3: Moderate discomfort and swelling managed with pain relief. Surgical drains may be in place and are typically removed within 48 hours. A compression bra is worn at all times.
- Days 4–7: Swelling and bruising begin to diminish. Patients notice immediate relief from prior back and shoulder pain.
- Weeks 2–4: Most patients return to sedentary work by week 2. Driving can resume once pain medication is no longer needed. No heavy lifting or high-impact activities.
- Months 2–3: Breast shape settles and softens. Scars begin to lighten. Gradual return to exercise is guided by follow-up appointments.
- Months 6–12: Final breast size and contour are established. Scars continue to fade and flatten, becoming significantly less visible.

Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my breasts be after reduction?
The amount removed is tailored to your goals and body frame. On average, one to two cup sizes are reduced, but larger reductions are possible depending on starting volume and desired outcome. Dr. Dhingra discusses precise goals during your consultation.
Will I be able to breastfeed after breast reduction?
While the pedicle technique preserves the nipple’s connection to underlying tissue, there is some risk of reduced milk supply. Patients who plan future breastfeeding should discuss this during their consultation.
Is breast reduction covered by insurance?
In many cases, breast reduction may be covered when medical necessity is documented—such as chronic pain or skin conditions. Dr. Dhingra’s team can assist with documentation to support your claim.
What will the scars look like?
Scars follow the incision pattern (typically around the areola and vertically down to the fold). They are red initially but fade significantly over 12–18 months. Scar management protocols including silicone therapy help optimise healing.
